Searching for Golden Experiences in California

My journey through California has been nothing short of amazing. I set out to explore beyond my comfort zone, choosing California as my destination to traverse the vast landscapes of the United States. Even though I didn’t end up living there as originally planned, each moment became a treasure, etched into the fabric of my memories.

Reconnecting with a friend from school after a decade was pure magic. Sharing our stories, rediscovering past accomplishments, and strengthening our friendship was unexpected but truly wonderful.

San Diego turned out to be a unique paradise, with its cultural diversity and proximity to the border making me feel like I was in Mexico or Asia. San Francisco, with its technological vibes, and Los Angeles, with the allure of Hollywood, offered unique experiences, although I must admit that LA didn’t captivate me as much as the other cities.

Exploring Japantown in San Francisco felt like diving into another culture, tasting unique flavors, and living moments that only California can offer. And yes, I did try the famous cannabis gummies—an experience I definitely recommend doing at home and in good company.

California, despite its efforts to be sustainable, showed me its less shiny side. Witnessing camping tents on the streets, the overwhelming presence of homelessness, the darkness in the streets, and the ever-rising prices made me realize the challenges it faces. However, I cannot ignore the richness of its history and the architectural diversity I encountered.

Houses with mid-century style, the minimalist simplicity in La Jolla, the colorful homes of San Francisco, and the western touch in Old Town San Diego created a tapestry of visual and cultural experiences. Discovering details like route numbers enclosed in an almond shape as a tribute to the gold rush added intriguing layers to my journey.

I processed every emotion, from driving through the mountains for the first time to savoring sunsets as if they were the last. Sharing moments with my friend, playing with her dachshund dogs, and tasting the beers of San Diego became treasures I’ll hold dear.

California may not be the paradise it once was, as the lifelong locals often say, but for me, it has been a land filled with golden moments. Even as the state loses a bit of its luster, I found my own treasure in these experiences. Thank you, California, for gifting me memories that will never fade. Until we meet again!
